What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the closest replacement to natural teeth, both in look and performance. These small, medical-grade titanium posts act as artificial tooth roots, securely placed into the jawbone to support crowns, bridges, or dentures. Once healed, your new teeth will look, feel, and function just like your own.

The Implant Procedure

Implant placement is a minimally invasive procedure, typically performed under local anaesthetic. Each implant takes around 30 minutes to place, after which it is left to heal beneath the gum for 8 to 10 weeks. This healing period allows the implant to fully integrate with your bone, creating a strong foundation for your new tooth or teeth.

Will it hurt? Mr Graham James explains here

What one of our patients said about dental implants

Stuart was referred to our dental implants dentist in Sutton Coldfield by his regular dentist. He came to us initially for dental implants for missing teeth at the back of his mouth as he was struggling to eat properly on that side of his mouth.

Replacing a single tooth

Replacing a single tooth is one of the simplest forms of dental implant treatment in Sutton Coldfield, as the neighbouring teeth don’t require preparation for the support of bridges.

Instead, the implant tooth will stand alone and can be cared for in the same way as your natural teeth.

Typically, the crown will be crafted using 3D manufacturing technologies and computer-aided design, and then hand-finished by our dental technicians. Consequently, you’ll be left with a stunning, natural appearance for your final “tooth”.

If you are looking for dental implants or a single dental implant near you, we can accommodate your requirements.

Replacing several teeth

Though it’s a slightly more complicated procedure, the replacement of several teeth is another service that can be offered.

This typically involves two implants being placed in order to replace three or four teeth; however, if a larger bridge is required or the biting force is especially heavy, additional implants may be placed.

As with the replacement of a single tooth, the natural teeth don’t need to be prepared in order to support this bridgework; instead, the implant construction directly replaces missing teeth without the remaining teeth being compromised. Similarly, 3D imaging is used alongside software simulations and guided surgery.

Implant retained dentures

Last but not least, implants can be used to stabilise uncomfortable or loose-fitting dentures. Removable dentures are prosthetic replacements for lost teeth that support the face and lips in the event that underlying bone has been lost as well.

Despite this, ill-fitting dentures can move around in one’s mouth and cause discomfort, meaning that dental implants can help retain dentures and increase their stability. Similarly, they can aid the comfort and even keep one’s jawbone.

Our specialist technicians can construct new dentures that complement your facial features. Traditional dentures rest on the gums and hook around the remaining teeth; however, this can result in neighbouring tissues being affected and more teeth being lost.

Meanwhile, the jawbone under the gum loses bulk, and the gum covering the jaw reduces in quality, resulting in more unstable and uncomfortable dentures.  It goes without saying that no one’s gums are designed to support dentures; the placement of implants allows the jawbone to be retained.

The provision of dental implants to support full dentures is the standard of care that we would suggest to each of our patients and members.

Not only are implant-retained dentures more stable, comfortable, and better for your gums, but they make good oral hygiene easier to achieve.

  • Can last a lifetime with proper care, unlike dentures or bridges that may need replacing.
Restores full chewing ability
  • Allows you to eat all types of food without discomfort.
  • No slipping or movement like traditional dentures.
Prevents bone loss & maintains facial structure
  • Stimulates the jawbone, preventing bone deterioration.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Why are dental implants so expensive?

One of the most common concerns about dental implants is their cost, which can run into thousands of pounds. Many patients ask why they are so expensive compared to other tooth replacement options.

The price of a dental implant is influenced by several key factors, including:

Comprehensive planning & assessment

Before placing an implant, a detailed consultation, X-rays, and sometimes 3D scans are required to assess bone density and overall oral health.

This ensures the best possible outcome.

Surgical procedure

Placing a dental implant is a precise surgical procedure requiring skill and expertise.

This involves inserting a titanium post into the jawbone, which then fuses with the bone over time.

High-quality materials

Dental implants are made from biocompatible titanium, a material that integrates with the bone while being durable and resistant to corrosion.

The abutment and crown are also crafted from strong, natural-looking materials, such as porcelain or zirconia.

Customised restoration

Once healed, the implant is restored with a custom-made crown, bridge, or denture.

These restorations are carefully designed to match the shape, size, and colour of your natural teeth for a seamless result.

Are dental Implants worth the cost?

Despite the upfront expense, dental implants are often the most cost-effective long-term solution. Unlike dentures or bridges, which may need replacement every 5 to 10 years, implants can last a lifetime with proper care, saving you money in the long run.

If you’re considering dental implants, invest in quality and safety. Contact us today to discuss your options!

Thinking of going abroad for cheaper dental implants?

While travelling abroad for dental implants may seem like a cost-effective option, there are several risks to consider:

Lack of Regulation – Dental standards and regulations vary between countries, and some clinics may not meet the same safety and hygiene standards as the UK.

Lower-quality materials – Some clinics may use lower-cost implant components that could compromise durability and long-term success.

Limited aftercare – If complications arise after the procedure, follow-up care may be difficult, requiring costly corrections back in the UK.

Higher risk of complications – Poor placement, infections, or implant failure can occur if proper protocols aren’t followed. Corrective treatment in the UK can end up costing more than the initial savings.
