Missing Multiple Teeth

Missing Multiple Teeth

We understand, missing teeth can be very limiting, dramatically reducing what you can eat and make you very self conscious at work and socially. We have a range of options to solve this problem, with dental implants being the first choice for most people.

What’s the problem with missing teeth?

We understand the implications missing teeth can have on your health and would always advise replacing missing teeth for your long term health. Missing teeth can cause other teeth to move, dramatically limit what you can eat effectively, be unsightly making you self-conscious at work and in social situations, and cause you to lose bone making your face “sink in”.

The more teeth you are missing, the bigger the problem can become over time.

One of the biggest concerns is that you use one side of your mouth more than the other, which can have a significant impact on the health of the teeth on that side (as they are over-used) and on the jaw joint on that side.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small metal post that is used to replace the root of your missing tooth. Once placed in the jaw, the implant can be used to support your new tooth.

If you are missing a row of teeth, we can place implants at either end of the space to support a row of teeth. For example, if you are missing a row of 3 teeth: we could place 2 implants at either end of the space and use them to support a bridge of 3 teeth. This will give you 3 teeth back that will look, feel, and function like healthy natural teeth.

How long does it take?

Placing a dental implant is a small procedure peformed under local anaesthetic that takes around 30 minutes for each implant placed. It is normally left under under gum for at least 8-10 weeks before your new teeth are attached to them.

Long Lasting

They are are completely independent of your own teeth, and so doesn’t interfere with them, and with simple maintenance should last you a lifetime.

Preserve

Dental Implants will also ‘preserve’ the bone in the jaw, preventing your face and cheeks from “sinking in”.

What are the alternative options?

A bridge is an alternative fixed option (if you have a small gap) that can look quite natural and where very popular in the 1980’s and 1990’s. It would involve preparing “drilling” the teeth either side of the missing teeth, as they are used to support the ones that are missing. This allows us to “bridge” the gap. Bridges can work very well, but often at the sacrifice of your adjacent teeth. They are likely to last 10-12 years before they will need replacing.

Dentures “false teeth” is the final option. These can be made from acrylic or metal and are designed to be removable so you can remove them for cleaning and sleeping (you should not sleep with a denture in). This is often the simplest option to replacing missing teeth but as it is removable, they are often the least desirable. We would expect a denture to last 5-7 years before it needs replacing due to the continuous loss of bone in the areas of your missing teeth.
