Misconceptions of Private Dentistry

Misconceptions of Private Dentistry

Unfortunately, dentists don’t have the best reputation, with 36% of the population being affected by dental anxiety and 12% suffering from extreme dental fear. Meanwhile, private dentists bear the brunt of even more contempt due to the cost, which is the main difference between NHS and private dentistry concerns for patients. Despite this, most of the disdain towards the dentist stems from nothing but misconceptions.

Here at Sutton Dental & Implant Clinic, we’re looking to dispel some of the most common myths about private dentistry. It’s our mission to alleviate any anxiety felt by our members and patients and provide them with the most comfortable experience possible.

Private Dentistry is Expensive

The most common complaint that dentists receive is that private dentistry costs in the UK are exorbitant. Despite this, dental expenses only rack up if you don’t take good care of your teeth. You should brush and floss your teeth twice daily and visit the dentist every six months for a dental health check (check-up).

We offer an array of monthly membership options at Sutton Dental & Implant Clinic, each of which delivers at least:

  • Two comprehensive dental health checks per year
  • Two AIRFLOW hygiene therapy sessions per year
  • 20% off routine dental treatment
  • Free in-house, out-of-hours service
  • Free emergency appointments

You can also upgrade your package to include more features. Regardless of which package you opt for, all treatments will be cheaper than traditional private dentists. Learn more about our memberships here.

You Don’t Need to Go if You’re Not in Pain

Many people are guilty of not visiting the dentist until they’re in pain and by that point, it could be too late to fix the problem without tooth removal. By visiting the dentist twice a year, you can identify and improve issues before they present themselves, allowing you to keep as many of your teeth as possible. Similarly, your toothbrush cannot remove all plaque, and routine cleaning can ensure that your teeth remain plaque-free.

The Dentist Will Judge You

One of the primary concerns of people across the globe is that their dentist will judge them for the condition of their teeth. It’s important to remember that your dentist isn’t there to judge you; they simply want to help you improve and maintain the condition of your teeth. On that note, you also shouldn’t be afraid to ask questions. You’re not expected to know everything, and your dentist will be more than happy to provide the answers and advice you need.

At Sutton Dental & Implant Clinic, we promise to always treat our members and patients with care and respect, as if they were members of our own family. As a result, you don’t have to worry about judgement here!

Dental Treatment is Painful

We’re not going to try and convince you that dental treatment is a pleasant experience. However, we make it our mission to ensure it’s as comfortable as possible. Our clinics are equipped with the latest technology,  designed to make the procedure as quick and comfortable as possible. Similarly, we’re always happy to offer a local anaesthetic to completely numb the area and provide you with a wholly pain-free experience.

Dentists Have a Low Tolerance for Nervous Patients

As previously mentioned, dental anxiety and fear are widespread, meaning that dentists are specially trained to handle nervous patients throughout the entire process. We encounter anxious patients every single day, meaning that we’re very experienced in making people feel at ease before, during, and after their treatment.

If you are someone who suffers from dental anxiety, we welcome you to express your concerns to your dentist. They will do all they can to alleviate these worries and make you feel as comfortable as possible for the entirety of the treatment.

You Have No Control During the Procedure

We’re here to help you, and that means that you have just as much control over your treatment as we do. If ever you feel any pain or discomfort that you can’t manage during the procedure, we ask that you raise your hand, and we will pause the treatment. We can then give you whatever you require to make the procedure more comfortable. This could be simply talking with us in more detail, administering more local anaesthetic, or even giving you a few minutes to relax – we can provide this support. Despite this, we can’t usually stop the treatment entirely, as this can compromise the tooth’s security and the patient’s well-being.
